I seem to recall that you need to be running at least OSF/1 version 2.0
on your machine to have the current version of IDL (3.6 or beyond) to
work. I'm guessing that this may be your problem. I'm afraid that the
only solution is to upgrade your operating system to OSF/1 v2.0 or,
preferably, v3.0.
