I thought Paul Krummel's article from this thread a
couple of weeks ago was particularly good on this
subject:

Re: color_quan(...., Cube=6) makes white white, but ...

He makes 300 dpi PNG files in GhostView from IDL PostScript
files. It looks great to me.
