I hope that is indeed the case. My only concern is that none of the *nix
versions have been released for students. Given the idl license manager
for *nix is a commercial product I suspect there are licensing costs and
this may be the root cause. I certainly hope this isn't a large
impediment and that some arrangement can be found.

I couldn't agree more. I would like to add that I hope:

(1) there isn't a CD-ROM coded license (like the student edition of
Matlab)

(2) the student version is upgraded and released simultaneously with the
real versions

(3) a reasonably priced upgrade is made available to each student when a
new version is released.
