There's at least one platform (Mac?) where CR/LF is a newline, rather
than LF/CR. There are machines where text files are stored in
fixed-length records, with each line starting a new record, and padded
out to the end of the record with 0s or blanks (I don't remember which).

I have no idea whether IDL runs on any such machines.
