This is a netCDF file, which should make endianess transparent through
the use of XDR. There are no "swap" keywords for the NCDF_OPEN function.

While I can shoot down David's idea, I have no idea what the problem is
(having no experience with Samba).

Since the data is on a Sun, why not use NFS to your Mac?
