Thanks for the hint. I came up with the same kludgy environment
variable workaround. We don't have an acceptable workaround for the
exit status problem so we are just ignoring application errors for the
moment. We considered writing the status to a file to be read by the
wrapper script, but the ugliness of that workaround makes me prefer to
put it on a "known bugs" list instead.
