For a beginner, the manuals which come with IDL are not the best
material to start with. Again, I recommend either David Fanning's or
Liam Gumley's book. David's is more tutorial-style, Liam's more
reference-style in my opinion. Spend a few days going through the
introductory chapters of one of them (and type the examples yourself!).
Then you should understand the greater picture of how IDL works, and
you'll be able to work out the details from the IDL help system or by
asking specific questions here on the newsgroup.
