You might want to include this line into your IDL startup file.

You might also want to get a good book on IDL :-). I can recommend both
David Fanning's and Liam Gumley's.

There is also a free IDL tutorial at

http://www.mpimet.mpg.de/en/misc/software/idl/

at the bottom of the page (mgs_script.pdf).
