The error ( x = STRARR(2, 127) & print, x(0,*) ) is reproducible. I logged
in to the Alpha via DECNET over Ethernet.

Alpha config: OpenVMS AXP V6.1, IDL V3.6
VAX 3100 config: VMS V5.3, IDL V3.5.1
