I belatedly thought to try it with one of our Linux boxes.

This generates an error message as soon as TEST_CURSOR is run

IDL> test_cursor
% X windows protocol error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter).
% Interrupted at: TEST_CURSOR 3 /h/bowman/idl/test/test_cursor.pro


It looks like it is an issue with Apple's X11 in 10.4. I'll submit a report to
RSI.
