Well, I admit I don't know much about common blocks,
having only used them a handful of times in
20 years of IDL programming, but I am perplexed
by your question. I keep asking myself, "How could
you NOT compile a procedure or function including
a COMMON which is not already defined?" Where else
would it be defined?

So, there must be some kind of problem you are
running into that I can't envision. What are you
trying to do, and what is preventing you from
doing that? Are you certain it is a COMMON block
that is preventing compilation? Why?
