If "uncomplicated" is what you are after, I'm afraid
you have chosen the completely wrong topic. :-(

How are your octal math skills?

I'd stick with TexToIDL if you can. Otherwise, you
are just going to have to get your hands dirty (VERY
dirty!) learning the embedded format codes. Good luck!
