What would happen if you copied the IDL installer from the CD into, say,
a folder in your home directory as the FIRST thing you do?

Then you could sudo the install script from that folder in your home
directory, and take it from there.

I have not read anything about any new linux kernel that can unpack
tarballs onto a cd rom.
