Take a look at the SEARCH3D function. If the intensity range of the muscle
tissue is sufficiently distinct from the surrounding tissues, this may be all
you need. I have IDL based routines that will do automatic segmentation of
the brain from MRI head data. These might work with your data. Send me email
if you're interested.
