Which IDL are you using?

On my iBook it's

whd% which idl
idl: aliased to /Applications/rsi/idl_6.1/bin/idl

Maybe you need to set your path so that it sees
/Applications/rsi/idl/bin/idl

You might have to

source /Applications/rsi/idl_6.1/bin/idl_setup

-- or --

. /Applications/rsi/idl_6.1/bin/idl_setup.{bash,ksh} (for {bash,ksh} users)

to get the path/aliases right.
