Two possibilities:

1. You might try increasing the number of colors reserved for widgets to

Idl.colors: -10

That's what I have in my .Xdefaults file. Perhaps -5 just isn't adequate
any more.

2. Perhaps other software running at the same time is using all the colors, so
that none are left for IDL to use.
