First time out of the shire? :)
Java and fortran newsgroups are relatively tame (like
travelling to Bree). They at least have a benign purpose,
even though they treat newcomers like an adopted redheaded
little brother. There are truly dark places out there in usenet,
filled with an evil that does not sleep.

anyways, you may be better off going to moderated forums
at java websites. (java.net for instance, java.about.com,
javareference.com, etc).
