OK, I have discovered, that FL does the same :-). So it cames from the
underlying system C library.

On the other hand, FL can read back the following line, it can recognize,
that the '-' sign is the beginning of the next number:

11.0335 11.0503 11.0615-1.60416e+006 1.05404e+007

I think IDL should do the same.
