Chris, thanks for this. It helps.

I wouldn't be too hard on iMap. I believe now the problem
isn't an IDL problem at all. I think the center of
the pixels is just NOT what the documentation says they
are. (It, uh, wouldn't be the first time that satellite
data documentation was wrong, in my admittedly limited
experience. In fact, I've seldom found it to be RIGHT!)

In any case, experience leads me toward a documentation
error in the satellite docs rather than toward an
implementation error in IDL.
