What I got from ITTVIS:

This bug report is our developer Steve Houston's top priority now, and
he says he has made progress toward identifying the deep source of the
problem, but does not yet have the definitive workaround for it. It is
indeed a problem of this latest ' Xorg-X11 server' compatibility with
IDL. Do you know how to restore the last installed version of the X
server from before this latest update? That is the main advice that we
would give at this time.

I hope to have more from Steve Houston next week. Feel free to remind me
whenever you want that you are waiting for an answer ... and check the
IDL User Forum.
