I installed the old packages manually form
http://snapshot.debian.net/

It looks like the problem is not the x-server. I reverted the x-server
to the version installed on the laptop of my girlfried (IDL runs
without problem there) and IDL is still crashing.

During the update which broke IDL, about 30 other packages were
changed on my system. Of course it is possible to downgrade each
package (and in the end IDL should run again) but at the moment I am
not willing to do it.
