Interesting to find this discussion - I walked away from some IDL work
last Thursday because the seg faults using tv commands from the
command line were 'one more problem' and too perplexing to look into
at that point. Here is the output from "X -version" on the system I
am currently on (two separate Fedora Core 6 systems, both coming down
with the same affliction on the same day!):

X Window System Version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
Build Operating System: Linux 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp i686 Red Hat, Inc.
Current Operating System: Linux zed 2.6.20-1.2933.fc6 #1 SMP Mon Mar
19 10:42:48 EDT 2007 i686
Build Date: 08 April 2007
Build ID: xorg-x11-server 1.1.1-47.8.fc6
Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.
Module Loader present

I have no glxinfo command... perhaps there is a package which I should
add?

Anyway, I have been updating Fedora through Yum. Both of my systems
were running Fedora Core 5 and I simply updated each of them using
Core 6 CDs, something I will never do again because of a plethora of
difficulties - fresh installs only from now on when switching core
versions.

I can add to this discussion by pointing out that procedures which use
the "tv" and Fanning's "tvimage" routines still work!! In other
words, this is only problematic for me when I issue tv-related
commands from the IDL prompt.
