Do you know the max number of character per string?

you could try something like this, which works well if you have only 1
character and would need a bit of work if you have more:

IDL> a= ['a','b','b','c','a']
IDL> b = byte(a)
IDL> print,b
97
98
98
99
97

IDL> print, histogram(b, min = 97, max = 99)
2 2 1
