For your info: we had the same problem (also with IDL 6.1) on a box
running Suse Linux 9.3 (xorg-x11-server-6.8.2-30.12). The solution you
describe would have worked (I suppose), but we chose to upgrade to IDL
6.4 instead, which also solved the problem. BTW, this is a known
issue; I remember seeing other posts in this group regarding the
matter.
