If you want to do something more general than overlays and have some
time to invest, you can check out some code i previously posted to
generate KML inside IDL.
I havent worked on it much since then, but i managed to use it to do
several kinds of things in KML. It's particularly useful if you need
loop over certain kinds of KML objects, creating a lot of them from an
array of data, for example.
