FWIW I have used netCDF data from the GIMA magnetometer array and it
worked out of the box with Gentoo. I have sci-libs/netcdf installed
via portage.

Using ncdf_open and then ncdf_varget etc worked fine.

Also,

IDL> print, ncdf_exists()
% Compiled module: NCDF_EXISTS.
% Loaded DLM: NCDF.
1
IDL>
