As a long-time IDL *and* Windows user, I would say
it is just about here in your analysis when things
start to fall apart for you. If iTools actually
improved your life, I'd love to hear about it. I've
been trying to collect stories like this for years
without success. ;-)

P.S. I would be willing to admit that the Workbench
improved my life considerably on UNIX computers, but
I attribute that more to old age and the inability
to learn the infinite complexities of EMACS than to
any properties inherent in the Workbench.
