Many thanks for this.

Directly after Window, i tried
IDL> Erase, COLOR=FSC_Color('white')
and got a response "variable is undefined: FSC_COLOR"

however when i used
IDL> Erase, COLOR=255
it had the desired effect, putting the background to white.
