Seriously, I'd think scale3 was verboten and crashed help for obscure
reasons, except that it actually works on code I recently wrote. I'm
not sure if it's actually doing anything, or doing what it's supposed
to, but at least it doesn't crash the program.

Well, I was able to look up the documentation on the web. Just sort of
a strange thing to have happened. I've never run across that before.
