Emily,

Are you on OS X? Are you viewing PostScript or is Preview.app
converting to PDF? On some versions of OS X the ghostscript converter
smooths images. Printed graphics still look blocky, and ImageMagick
(convert foo.ps foo.png) produces correct output.
