Almost certainly because one of your assumptions is
wrong. There is nothing to do but step through your
code, step by step until you figure out which one
(or ones, often) are wrong. This is Basic Programming
101. We can't help much.

P.S. If it is any consolation, once you run into this
kind of problem three or four times, it sometimes
gets easier to solve. Or not. :-)
