I'm not sure if it's OK to post all the details but there were a
couple of bugs: #49144 ("TILINGJP2_DOC App Indicates Incompatibility
Between New DE and WIDGET_ TIMER Events") and #48454 ("Using
WIDGET_TIMER can cause applications to freeze until an event is sent
to the application"):

Something to do with an optimisation for zero-delay WIDGET_TIMER
events on Windows that stopped working with the new DE. Probably not
at all relevant to the current issue; I'm just saying there were some
changes.
