I have never been particularly successful warping images from one
projection to another with IDL. At NSIDC we use a program called
mapx to do the warping. It is a UNIX-only piece of software,
hard to install (although freely available), poorly documented,
and it works great after the resident expert shows you how it
works a half-dozen times or so.

But I recommend you go look up Frank Warmerdam and FWTools.
Frank and others have written a suite of tools that do just
about everything it is possible to do with maps and map
projections. GDAL is what you are looking for to do image
warping.
