I can only suggest running it under gdb (gdb /usr/bin/emacs then "run"
at the prompt), to see if the segfault occurs anywhere interesting.
Crashing IDL should *not* bring down emacs (just as it does not bring
down a normal shell). So could be some problem with your Emacs, and
potentially X11.
