Need a good IDL solution for this:

I have a number of large matched grids with the same XY. For each
location, I need to calculate:

1) The number of different values in the matched grids;
2) The mode, that is, the frequency of the most common value.

I'm sure someone out there can instantly think of a good array-based
solution to this problem. I'm kinda stumped.
