I wouldn't be using mpfitexpr which requires an indirect function evaluation (EXECUTE statement) but mpfitpeak which has built-in support for a Gaussian fit.

As Craig Markwardt notes ( http://www.physics.wisc.edu/~craigm/idl/mpfittut.html )
mpfitexpr is mainly for quick fitting at the command line, and for multiple calls inside a program.
