I think poidev.pro ( http://idlastro.gsfc.nasa.gov/ftp/pro/math/poidev.pro ) will work.

IDL> imnoise = POIDEV( im)

One could also do this using a combination of the /POISSON keyword to randomn and the /reverse_indices keyword to HISTOGRAM. --Wayne
