Thank you for your solutions.

Since this is for a journal, I will keep the Latex solution without
merging. For pdfTeX:

epstopdf fig_a.eps
epstopdf fig_b.eps

to create the pdfs I will use and in the latex file:

\begin{figure}
\vspace*{2mm}
\center\includegraphics[width=120mm]{fig_a}
\center\includegraphics[width=120mm]{fig_b}
\end{figure}


It would still be interesting to do ps merging automatically without
loosing quality!
