I know you don't want to hear this, but I would
do a complete fresh install after clearing
out ALL my IDL directories (including the
invisible ones!). Did you install the 64-bit
version of IDL? That's what I am using. I note
that I had a similar problem, and that it was caused
by a function that I had left over in a directory from
a previous beta version of the software.

Don't know what to tell you. This is just one of
many frustrations I've had with IDL 8 in general. :-)

Are you updating your JAVA version on a regular basis.
Eclipse problems could be related to JAVA. I update
my machines regularly.

I feel for you. Python, by the way, has its own problems.
Maybe there is no really good solution anymore.
