can you load idl without the environment?
the command is
$idl
in the terminal or you have to
cd /usr/local/itt/idl/bin/
sh idl

it is always nice to reinstall idl to be sure. You won't lose files.

if you run on the temrinal
$idlde
what is output? Do you have any other problems?
