You can have a look at Markwardt's CMAPPLY (Apply generic function to array)
http://www.physics.wisc.edu/~craigm/idl/down/cmapply.pro


I also have done something similar but with a different approach. But I never had time (or just too lazy) to clean up the code to a state that it can be published on its own ...
