Hi David,
When I use
set_plot, 'ps'
!p.font=0
device, filename='fig_better.eps', encapsulated=1, /helvetica

I get the following error
CGIMAGE: An AlphaBackgroundImage is required to create transparent images in PostScript.

Anyideas...
