I can believe it! Unfortunately, I don't think there are any non-
frustrating answers. :-(

I'm guessing your best bet would be your GeoTiff option. That way you
only have to spend a week or two poking around in the GeoTiff specs. The
EOS_GD way leads through miasmatic swamps. Travelers there have gone
missing for decades. Good luck!
