You can make the exponent smaller with the !E positioning command

p=plot([0,1],[0,1],name='best fit function 2.35w$\sqrt{N!E2!N + EF\slash w}$')

though it still overlaps the square root top bar.

I'd probably just write out "SQRT( )" rather than make the symbol. --Wayne
