Does anyone have any experience with this sot of thing? Any ideas on where to read up on it? Will it work at all, that is, will IDL run?

If your installation of IDL relies on a separate license server, then IDL should work
out of the box on the new machine. If, on the other hand, you have your own license
installed as a license.dat file on your computer, you may be in for a bit more work.

The issue is that the license.dat file refers to the mac address of your computer's
ethernet card. Assuming that your new computer has a new card and thus
a new mac address, the old license.dat won't work.

You can fix this problem by contacting Harris and asking to transfer your existing license
to the new machine. This involves getting a new license.dat file and copying it into the
appropriate directory on your new machine. Harris's web portal lets you do this
without human interaction, assuming you have an up-to-date maintenance contract
(i.e. a subscription). If not, they might still be able to help you by email or over the phone.

All the best,

David
