One way to take advantage of IDL's built in functions when
comparing arrays is to use the REVERSE_INDICES keyword in a call to
HISTOGRAM. For general problems the methods already posted will
probably save you time and memory but if you have a restricted data
range or if you are comparing a small set of important values with a
large array a cleverly constructed set of histogram bins can save you
a lot of looping.
