Thanks for the answer !

In the meantime: the artefact must be a Paint Shop Pro - specific
effect: the same file has the correct dimension when opened with some
other image processing tool (AdobePhotoshop).

BTW , I'm running IDL5.0 under NT4.0. The syntax specifications
(write_tiff, []) are new in IDL5.0.
