I use IDL 5.3 on Linux as well and I've never heard of 'dlm_register.' Are
you sure you don't mean 'dlm_load?'

I usually just set the environment variable appropraiately and only use
dlm_load when I'm in real trouble :(

IDL_DLM_PATH=/export/home/rhskelto/idl/dlm:<IDL_DEFAULT>
