Cleaning the registry didn't help, but it did find a lot of errors.
ITT tech support told me to delete the hidden directory of workbench
config files (C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\.idl), which
apparently isn't removed when you uninstall IDL, and that solved the
problem.
So was this an IDL issue or an OS issue? Or maybe both?

Well, I'm still not sold on the idea of it's being
an "IDL problem", but it is not outside the world
of possibility, certainly. But I've been working with IDL
for a long time (15 yrs?) on Windows computers and I've never,
ever had a problem like this with it.
My recommendation, based on problems I *have* had is to
do this. Uninstall IDL. Then run a registry cleaner
(a good idea at ANY time!). I use Registry Mechanic and
highly recommend it. Sometime I run it twice in a row, just
to be sure. Then install IDL again.
Let us know what happens. :-)
Cheers,
David

This is my office computer, and I keep all my pirated stuff at home.
There was an XP automatic update that I installed this morning, but
after removing it IDL is still crashing. I haven't made any other
changes, updates, or added software in the last few weeks. MatLab and
every other program works fine and the firewall and virus protection
are on and haven't found anything.
IDL starts up and begins analyzing code, then crashes within about 5
seconds. This is the first problem I've had with IDL.
This is the Error Signature I get (I have yet to decipher what, if
anything, it means)
EventType : BEX P1 : idlde.exe P2 : 0.0.0.0 P3 :
46437674
P4 : idl_bml.dll P5 : 7.0.0.0 P6 : 47214e8c P7 :

P8 : c0000409 P9 : 00000000

I would guess whatever it is it probably has
little or nothing to do with IDL, which would
explain why a re-install of IDL wouldn't help.
Do you have automatic updates turned on for this
machine? Have you updated a JAVA distribution,
perhaps automatically? Did you update a graphics
driver? Have you installed any other software in
the past few days? Do you have a firewall installed
on this machine to protect against viruses? Does
other software (MatLab, R, etc.) still work?
Exactly when does IDL crash? Before it even gets
started? When you open a graphics window? You
have given us too few clues.
If it helps at all, I've been running IDL 7 on a Windows XP
machine with 4GByte of RAM for well over three years
with not a single problem. :-)
Cheers,
David
P.S. This isn't a student machine filled with pirated movies,
is it?

I have used IDL for 10 years without a problem, then suddenly today my IDL sessions (on Windows 7) all crashed within a few seconds of starting IDL. The error listed the fault at idl_bml.dll. This was true for both the command line and the workbench. After trying many things, I came across this thread and removed the hidden workbench directory. That was the solution, and IDL now runs again.
Thanks!
