Hello,
My computer is on its last legs and my boss wants me to install the disk image of it on a new computer. IDL is installed on the linux half of a linux/windows dual boot. Does anyone have any experience with this sot of thing? Any ideas on where to read up on it? Will it work at all, that is, will IDL run?
Thanks,
Mark

If your installation of IDL relies on a separate license server, then IDL should work
out of the box on the new machine. If, on the other hand, you have your own license
installed as a license.dat file on your computer, you may be in for a bit more work.
The issue is that the license.dat file refers to the mac address of your computer's
ethernet card. Assuming that your new computer has a new card and thus
a new mac address, the old license.dat won't work.
You can fix this problem by contacting Harris and asking to transfer your existing license
to the new machine. This involves getting a new license.dat file and copying it into the
appropriate directory on your new machine. Harris's web portal lets you do this
without human interaction, assuming you have an up-to-date maintenance contract
(i.e. a subscription). If not, they might still be able to help you by email or over the phone.
All the best,
David

Thanks David,
This is good information to have. I have a license.dat file... Actually, the real problem is that the linux half of the dual boot which has IDL isn't accessible, if you try to boot in linux nothing happens. I had someone look at it, the way our (ex) IT guy set things up was unstable.
So... what I want to do is somehow access the linux half of the boot. I was thinking about copying the linux disk image to the computer: I'd delete the old linux partition, and set up a new dual boot, and copy the disk image into the linux half. Since the mac address I believe will still the be same that might work...
I'll give Harris a call too. Somewhat ironically, I got a job offer from them a couple weeks ago which I accepted, but this morning they rescinded the offer after it turned out I didn't have the security clearance they thought I had. Of course, I'd already given my two weeks notice at my present job. Fortunately, they're letting me stay on for a while yet. Much more than I deserve, I can tell you that.
